A recent study by University of Queensland researchers has found that many Brisbane homes may be covered in a potentially toxic substance - 6PPD-quinone, a chemical linked to mass salmon kills in the US. This discovery raises concerns for urban dwellers and highlights a critical gap in understanding the environmental impact of tyre-wear particles.

The study tested 30 balconies and found that 23 were coated with 6PPD-quinone. This is particularly alarming given the prevalence of microplastics globally, with an estimated six million tonnes created each year through tyre wear. Past research has focused on dust in roads, waterways, and sediments, but this study highlights the need for further investigation into urban homes.

The presence of 6PPD-quinone on balconies poses serious health implications. Inner-city homes were more likely to be coated with the toxic substance, with those within five kilometres having significantly more particles. This raises questions about urban planning and air quality. Wind speed also plays a role in dispersing these particles, complicating our understanding of the issue.

While electric vehicles are often touted as an environmentally friendly alternative, research suggests that they may actually increase tyre wear due to their battery weight. This raises important questions about the trade-offs we make in pursuit of sustainability. As lead researcher Simran Kaur noted, “there is definitely a need for more research to investigate any potential human and environmental impacts.”

The global scope of microplastic pollution affects not just urban environments but also marine ecosystems. The study highlights a critical need for further research into the human and environmental impacts of 6PPD-quinone. As Kaur noted, “EVs reduce exhaust emissions, which is great … [but] because EVs are often heavier due to their batteries, that might create more tyre wear.”

The study’s findings serve as a wake-up call for policymakers, researchers, and everyday citizens alike.
